Fact-checking as a public discourse verification practice in Latin America and Venezuela

This research seeks to name and describe the projects that fact-check public discourse in Latin America and Venezuela. To achieve this objective, a qualitative and quantitative methodology of documentary and content analysis was applied (Arias, 1999; Sampieri, 2014), taking into account in each case the country in which they operate, the year of creation, the current state of activity and the method used for verification. Among the results obtained, it was found that there are 36 fact-checking sites in Latin America, of which 26 are active and 10 inactive. All of them are dedicated to verify public speeches, although some also check information with indications of being false news. In Venezuela, at the time of the presentation of this paper, there are only two developed fact-checking projects: Cotejo.info, dedicated exclusively to this practice, and Cocuyo Chequea, a verification unit of the digital media Efecto Cocuyo.
