Abstract

The aim of the study was to design and validate a scale to assess individuals' attitudes towards mathematics. A non-experimental, cross-sectional and instrumental design was used, with a sample of 405 students from a higher technological institute. The instrument consisted of 25 items distributed in three dimensions. Initially, a content validation was carried out through expert judgment, obtaining an Aiken V index of 0.98, which indicates a high adequacy. Subsequently, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out to evaluate the psychometric properties of the instrument. The results showed the extraction of three main factors that explain 60.196% of the total variance. The matrix of rotated components evidenced a coherent grouping of the variables in the three domains, reflecting a well-defined factor structure. Most of the items presented high factor loads (greater than 0.6) in a single factor, which supports the validity of the instrument. However, item P25 was not significantly associated with any of the three factors identified, suggesting that it may not fit the underlying structure or may be measuring an aspect different from that assessed by the other items. In conclusion, the findings support that the designed scale has a solid and coherent factor structure, which supports its construct validity to assess attitudes towards mathematics in the context studied.
